Newsweek Covers The New iPod.

Newsweek Cover
The latest Newsweek, due out on Monday, has Steve on the cover with the yet to be announced new iPod. The new iPod, also due for announcement tomorrow, appears to be exactly as advertised by Think Secret last night. White, slightly smaller, higher capacity with a new wheel. The wheel appears to be just like the one on the iPod Mini, with the controls in the dial rather than separate like the older format. Others are speculating that the software may also get an update because of the “Music” item in the main menu of the iPod Steve is holding (thanks to Gizmodo for the scoop).

Also available online are the articles in the magazine, iPod Nation, which has an interesting section on how the iPod was born, and Breaking Up Is Hard To Do.

We’ll update you as we get news on the release date for Australia.

Update : (July 18 2004) A new article has appeared in Newsweek with more detail on the new 4G iPod, The New iPod. The list of differences with the new unit is :

  • Click Wheel, just like the iPod Mini.
  • New menus including Music and Shuffle Songs at the root level which make it easier to opperate.
  • Multiple On The Go Playlists.
  • Adjust track speed while you listen, great for audio books and DJs.
  • 12 hour battery life.
  • Cheaper. Currently the word is $US100 less, we’ll see how that converts to the Aussie dollar.
  • Not listed in Newsweek, but apparent in the photo that have been leaked to Spymac is the backlight for the Click Wheel. Update : (July 21 2004) Apparently the photo is a fake, and there is no backlight for the wheel.

The real question is, will any of the updates make it into a software update for the 3G iPods.
