Thump!

Oakley ThumpThis is a few days old now, but here we go. The appropriately named Oakley Thump integrates a flash based mp3 player with your fashionable Oakley eyewear. Available in 128 and 256 MB capacities, the Thump glasses use speakers mounted to the frame on adjustable booms so they can be positioned for “optimal ear placement”. Hopefully your ears are optimally placed already, but you know, some of us have defects!

If you ask us, and we know you are, we think they’re kind of ugly. But if they’re good enough for Lance, then I’m sure they’re good enough for, you know, everyone!

They also “feature” flip up lenses so there’s no need to stop listening when the light starts to fade. Just flip the lenses up out of the way to continue listening to your ultra hip tunes without looking like too much of a tool.

Oakley are boasting a signal to noise ratio of greater than 90dB, and custom engineered Mylar speakers for frequency response up to 20 kHz. Controls are mounted on the ear stem and is able to play MP3, WMA (DRM crippled or not) and WAV files. Drag and drop simplicity means that anyone should be able to drag their copy of “Sunglasses at night” (sorry) across to their new Oakleys.

Oakley are claiming that the internal Li-Ion battery is good for about 6 hours of play time.

A quick call to Oakley’s Australian operations confirmed that we won’t be seeing these glasses until some time in the new year. US pricing has been announced at US$395 for the 128 MB version and US$495 for the 256 MB version.

I am glad that Oakley came up with this. In the past Oakley’s have always been light weight and durable, these look like they will carry the same qualities. Thump will be perfect for mountain biking or snowboarding.
