The Big News From CES.

Creative CommiesThe major news from CES so far this week hasn’t been the Xbox 2, but firstly Bill’s blue screens of death in his keynote, and then the creative commies meme that’s flooded the net like any good propaganda.

Not just one blue screen, but three glitches. Amazingly one on an Xbox when trying to start the game Forza Motor Sport, with the blue screen and message, “Out of system memory”. The second on their Microsoft Media Center, and the third when a product manager failed to access the internet with a Tablet PC.

Next Xeni Jardin, at Boing Boing, posts about some comments that Gates makes to CNet, Bill Gates: Free Culture advocates = Commies.

In recent years, there’s been a lot of people clamoring to reform and restrict intellectual-property rights. It started out with just a few people, but now there are a bunch of advocates saying, “We’ve got to look at patents, we’ve got to look at copyrights.” What’s driving this, and do you think intellectual-property laws need to be reformed?
No, I’d say that of the world’s economies, there’s more that believe in intellectual property today than ever. There are fewer communists in the world today than there were. There are some new modern-day sort of communists who want to get rid of the incentive for musicians and moviemakers and software makers under various guises. They don’t think that those incentives should exist.

Next, Jaime creates a Creative Commies Poster, William creates some icons, Ryan creates some T-Shirts on Cafe Press and then Giant Robot Printing offer a version for $US10 shipped anywhere worldwide.

Apparently Bill Gates keynote at CES is available here. But given we’re a bunch of Commie Mac users we can’t seem to get the video. Must be a Windows IE thing.

Update : (January 8, 2005) Sean Alexander, who assisted with the keynote, has his Behind the Scenes Account.

Update : (January 8, 2005) Boing Boing points to a video where Lessig (chair of Creative Commons) closes the presentation, and gives his cut on the whole fiasco. Starts at about 28:20 on the file.

Update : (January 8, 2005) Robert Corr recreates the logo with the Creative Commons, cc sign, rather than the Copyleft logo.

Update : (January 8, 2005) According to Cell Phone Fan, the video of Gate’s keynote isn’t available at all anymore, not just to mac users. The suggestion is something else went wrong.
