Canon PowerShot S2 IS has arrived
They kept us waiting anxiously for a few weeks, but the Canon PowerShot S2 IS is now in stores (Ted’s Camera Store and Harvey Norman) for $749. It’s been getting the most hits on Digital Photography Review for a while now and this gadget junkie can’t wait to get his hands on one.
Digital Photography Review has also recently posted a comprehensive review.

Wireless Nation.
A new Aussie directory listing independent wireless hotspots has launched called Wireless Nation. Currently they claim over 1028 hotspots listed. The only issue is that there is a $10 fee for a year. Which in itself isn’t a lot of money, but when I don’t use many hotspots it’s not going to pay back anytime soon. There is currently a free 30 day trial, so at least you can get a feel for it.
The interesting feature is the WAP enabled service though. So the mobile warrior doesn’t have to rely on smoke signals and can use their phone to check for a location.
Beyond its web service, this Australian owned and operated site provides a WAP enabled service so the closest hotspot can be found anywhere using any appropriate mobile phone. Features include a search by postcode, price, member ratings and reviews.

Slow Take Up Of Digital TV.
TELEVISION manufacturers should be forced by government to include built-in digital receivers in all new TV sets sold in Australia to drive the transition from analogue broadcasting systems to high-quality digital.
Yeah, what a great idea. Why don’t we make consumers pay the price to accelerate adoption of digital TV. That way the networks won’t need to do anything.
Damn morons.
Here’s another suggestion. Why not ensure that all TV networks are innovating and adding new features to digital transmissions, so that consumers will actually want to adopt digital TV to see them. Can’t they understand that having lame documentaries that carry subtitles masquerading as an extra feature isn’t innovative use of the signal.
More at the Australian IT article, Alarm over slow digital take-up.

Widgets, Widgets and More Widgets.
For Tiger users there is a nice new Widget farm available at Widget Machine. I think the site is for Firefox and Safari only. Very nice UI mind you. There are a few widgets available now, some free and some for a fee, but worth keeping an eye on.
If your keen on a broad range then check out DashboardWidgets or the Apple Dashboard section.

Still No Itunes Music Store?

We haven’t seen any new rumours about the Australian iTunes Music Store since we heard that Apple was struggling with one last label signing the deal. So we may as well start a fresh one. Reliable sources have told Gadget Lounge that when companies need to ensure they have good signage for a special event, they’ll book out a batch and run their current adverts. As soon as the launch occurs, all the adverts are replaced overnight. That way their is no contention with the current advertiser.
Has anybody noticed a dramatic increase in bus stop signage for iPods lately? Of course it could also be because they bought advertising space for last months fizzled launch.
