Virgin to be the first UK radio station available on Wii and PS3

Gamers who own a Nintendo Wii or PlayStation 3 will be able to listen to Virgin Radio as it is to become the first UK radio station available on the games consoles.

Virgin and other SMG-owned stations Xtreme, Classic Rock and Groove are available via the consoles’ browsers using Virgin’s online radio player as Windows Media and Real Player are not currently compatible with the two consoles.

Users can also watch videos and sessions as well as buy CDs, tickets and tracks through the Virgin Radio Ticket Store. However because the capacity of the consoles means users will not be able to listen to the station while playing games is this anything to be excited about?

I can’t see why anyone would care and it certainly is not a buying point for either of the consoles. In fact I’m sure that if you have the funds to buy a PS3 you can easily buy a radio or listen via your computer or even via Sky Digital or Virgin media.

Mercedes with Backseat iMac

Perhaps there should be a German version of the popular MTV show Pimp My Ride. German car customizer Mattes Interieurtechnik built a Mercedes CLS with an integrated backseat iMac. Mattes even carefully covered the outer edge of the iMac in leather to help it blend in with the cream colored interior.

Where are the cables? Mattes didn’t want any wires to clutter up his masterpiece, so he made sure to get a wireless mouse and Bluetooth keyboard. I wonder if he integrated the iMac into the speaker system so his passengers can be backseat DJs.

You can check out some more pictures here.

Illegal Howard Stern Downloads Rampant

Didn’t get a Sirius satellite radio yet? Miss hearing Howard Stern in the mornings? You’re not alone. FM ratings have plummeted since Stern left terrestrial radio and people who didn’t make the move to satellite are looking for other places to get their daily Stern fix.

According to TheRawFeed.com, illegal downloading of Howard Stern’s Sirius satellite radio show is “rampant.” At first, the amount of avid Stern downloaders was relatively small. That all changed after the Los Angeles Times reported that bootlegged versions of the Stern show are easily available on file-sharing networks like BitTorrent. This Los Angeles Times article didn’t go unnoticed. As a result, illegal Howard Stern downloading has increased radically.

BitTorrent isn’t the only place to find illegal versions of the Howard Stern show. Grab a FM radio and scan through the channels slowly. You might just hear Howard. Pirate radio stations in New York and New Jersey are broadcasting Stern’s morning show over unused portions of the FM spectrum.

But the easiest and most reliable way to hear Howard Stern each and every morning is to just cough up the $0.40 a day and get a Sirius satellite radio.

Triple J Trials Podcasting.

Triple J PodcastOur local Political Blogger guru, Robert Corr of Kick & Scream, wrote in to point out that Triple J has started Podcasting. They won’t be offering their current programs, but some of the archives for their Hack show that they broadcast weekdays at 5.30 pm. As they say, if they see a good amount of downloads then they’ll continue the services, or as Robert points out, “it might spread to other ABC News services, which would be excellent for podcast listeners.”

How to subscribe:

1. Download podcasting software such as iPodder or alternate podcasting software. Most applications operate on Mac, PC or Linux. All are free.

2. Once you have set up and acquainted yourself with the podcasting software, then copy & paste this URL: http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/hack/podcast/podcast.xml into your podcasting program. This will add Hack to your podcasting subscriptions.

3. If you want to receive these programs regularly, make sure the scheduling function on your podcasting software is set to search for new podcasts automatically

If you are set up correctly, you should receive a new hack program once every 1-2 weeks until late January. Depending on how this trial goes, we may decide to continue the service in 2005.

So everyone, get on in and give it a whirl.

Digital Radio Moratorium.

Adoption of digital radio could go the same way as digital TV has in Australia, very slowly, if industry body Commercial Radio Australia has its way. They’re happy to have it, just nothing that means they need to innovate to be competitive. We understand that most people are adverse to change, but the CRA wants the Government to wait 10 years before they allow the competition to enter the digital radio market. That should be enough to stifle adoption while they take their merry time introducing new features. Gladly the Government is pushing back.

If they had their finger on the pulse, they might realise they have a couple of new contenders.

Getting The Digital Radio Bug.

Smarthouse Magazine has the goss on The Bug on display at Commercial Broadcasting Australia’s collection in Domayne at Alexandria (Sydney). The Bug records live digital radio so you can pause, rewind up to 12 minutes, store it as an MP3 for your PC, or onto a SD card. TheBug.jpg
