ADSL2+ Routers Hit The Shelves In Australia.
Digital Connect News and ARNnet have details of two ADSL2+ routers available from Netgear and D-Link. The Billion router, which is ADSL2+ capable, has been available for many months now, suggests that most vendors will have options available.
This currently means nothing to Australian DSL customers, because none of the ISPs currently run the new specification. However, many of the ISPs with their own or proposed DSLAMs are discussing using the new standard. When it is available, using the new routers will provide a possible bandwidth of 24 Megabits per second. A whopping 300% increase on the current ADSL standard used in Australia. Having said that, currently there are no ISPs that will provide the 8 Megabits per second ADSL maximum found in some other countries, and it is likely that the ADSL2+ option will only be available initially to businesses at a premium.
The Netgear DG632 features a two-port router, modem, firewall and will have a starting RRP of $AU149. The D-Link DSL-G604T is a four-port router, modem, 802.11g and will have a RRP of $AU249.95. The Billion BIPAC-7402/7402W are four-port routers, with firewall, and 802.11b in the W variant. $AU199 and $AU219 respectively. All mention an upgrade to the ADSL2+ standard via new firmware.
