iPod Pinouts.
Player Blog points to some ingenious people that have reverse engineered the 3rd Generation iPod’s connector and provided Remote Protocol and Dock Pinout. This means that other ingenious people can then go and create their own additions to the device. Now that this is out, if they can take it to the next level and provide the protocol for what’s currently playing, then it would be great for someone to build Dan’s iPod mini projector.

iPod mini In Australian Stores Today.

The iPod mini is officially in Australian stores today. Next Byte confirmed they have them available to be picked up this morning. It’s only a matter of time before we see them in the wild.
If you happen to have one, we’d love to see a picture in front of an Australian landmark, which we’ll happily publish. Just post a comment.
Update : (July 24 2004) Stores like Myer, Target and Dick Smith have reduced the 15GB 3rd Generation iPod to $AU399. Given Apple have stopped making these, now is a good time to pick up one of these before they run out.

iPod Favourite Flavours.
OK, so I lied. There is still more news besides the new 4th generation iPod. According to AppleInsider the most popular colour iPod mini in the U.S. is silver, followed by pink, then blue, with green and gold equal last. At Macworld U.K. a poll showed slightly different results with the list being silver (46%), blue (26%), green (13%), pink (9%) and gold (6%), however, this may just be a reflection of the readers demographic. Mostly butch blokes that steer clear of girly colours. I’d imagine the U.S. results will hold true for Australia, but it’ll be interesting to see when they start to ship tomorrow. Macmall in Australia is advertising “limited quantities of all colours available for shipment”.

ClickWheel iPod Dismantled.
I promise that the new iPod posts will settle down soon once the interest wanes. We had to point to iPoding who dismantled a perfectly good, well, slightly scratched and smudged, ClickWheel iPod. No major revelations or findings. The chipset is the same as that in the iPod Mini, the Portal Player PP5020, the company discussed in a recent Wired article, Inside Look at Birth of the IPod.

What’s Up With The New iPod?

diversionary/daily cleverly reports that the low end iPod, now 20GB, has less value than a week ago. Previously, the 20GB iPod came bundled with the Dock, Wired Remote and Carry Case. Today it doesn’t. Having said that, none of these are requirements, and there will be the normal flood of 4G iPod cases soon that offer better features and fashion.

iPod Remixed.
As was noted here yesterday, and by any self respecting gadget site, the new iPod has been officially announced today. It is also now available to order in the Australian Apple Store with a big splash on the front page of the main site.
Now the 20GB option will set you back $AU499, when only yesterday it was $AU598, and the 40GB is $649, a reduction of $150. With all the new fruit.
A Quicktime VR is also available if your keen on a 3D view of what the new iPod looks like.
Unfortunately, it looks like the third generation iPod isn’t getting an update of software to enhance the features like the new 4G, software update (via Gizmodo).
Update : (July 21 2004) There is a post on Neowin.net with photos and some details from a user who just picked the new iPod up from a store.

Newsweek Covers The New iPod.

The latest Newsweek, due out on Monday, has Steve on the cover with the yet to be announced new iPod. The new iPod, also due for announcement tomorrow, appears to be exactly as advertised by Think Secret last night. White, slightly smaller, higher capacity with a new wheel. The wheel appears to be just like the one on the iPod Mini, with the controls in the dial rather than separate like the older format. Others are speculating that the software may also get an update because of the “Music” item in the main menu of the iPod Steve is holding (thanks to Gizmodo for the scoop).
Also available online are the articles in the magazine, iPod Nation, which has an interesting section on how the iPod was born, and Breaking Up Is Hard To Do.
We’ll update you as we get news on the release date for Australia.
Update : (July 18 2004) A new article has appeared in Newsweek with more detail on the new 4G iPod, The New iPod. The list of differences with the new unit is :
The real question is, will any of the updates make it into a software update for the 3G iPods.

A New iPod?
There has been a few rumours lately, including the ones where Apple will have a new iPod later this year with new colours and larger size (60GB). The colour screen rumours have been rife for some time, but the latest is from Think Secret, who have gone out on a limb, or has some really good source, and say that Apple will announce some new iPods on Monday, July 19. They say, “it will be thinner; it will also have a new scroll wheel of different color and design”, possibly with lower prices. We’d expect to see these hit Australia in a couple of months if the rumour turns out to be true.

Apple Airport Express Reviewed.
iPodlounge (no relation) has a review of Apple’s latest gadget the AirPort Express.
For those not familiar, Apple has a software product called iTunes for the Mac and Windows that stores and plays your music. It is also used to managed music on an iPod. The Airport Express is a wireless hub (802.11g) that handily plugs straight into a wall socket and has ports for Ethernet or DSL, USB and audio mini-jack. The later lets you plug straight into your stereo and stream music straight from iTunes. It also supports a USB printer and because of its size is touted as being great as a traveling wireless base station.
The review is positive, bar some issues they have when connecting a the Windows laptop to the network, mostly solved when they allow Windows to do the networking instead of AirPort Express Assistant or Intel’s wireless software.
Update : (July 17 2004) MacSlash also has a brief review.
