Universal targets jazz fans and classical music buffs

Universal Music, the owners of the world?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s biggest collection of classical recordings, has created its own online store, classicsandjazz.co.uk, which it says will offer highest quality sound reproduction. Universal expects initial sales to be relatively modest but they hope that by the third quarter to be making a positive contribution to the business.

The online store, which focuses on jazz and classical genres, are offering tracks as 320 Kbps Windows media audio files as fans of the genres have not been impressed by the poorer quality found on itunes.

More than 125,000 titles are available to download including every Mozart composition as well as tracks from celebrated jazz legends such as Ella Fitzgerald and John Coltrane. The downloads start at 0.79 pounds ($1.53) per track with roughly 1,500 titles to be added each month.

At present, only U.K. users can download works from the site; UCJ aspires to make available the operation to international markets by Q2.

Exclusive content and reviews are also part of the Classics and Jazz online offering with other features, including video, podcasts, ringtones and downloadable album artwork, to roll out later this year.
